Russian spy caught. Scorn or praise for Estonia? (II)

Military sources have stressed that Major Deniss Metsavas had a personal unblemished background, if one sets aside his father’s and grandfather’s history. He was the highest ranking officer in the Estonian military with full ethnic Russian heritage. He had been on a foreign mission in Afganistan. He had appeared in the media as a fine example of successful inter-ethnic integration in the Defence Forces.

How much damage Major Deniss Metsavas and his father Pjotr Volin were able to inflict on Estonian national security will emerge during ongoing interrogations and investigations.

The commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, General Riho Terras at a press conference stated that harm done by the two was substantial. The head of the Estonian Security Police (KAPO), said that the GRU is primarily interested in the military of NATO partners deployed in Estonia, the details of their working relationship and the military equipment available.
