TALLINN- The first meeting of the Estonian Government Committee on Global Estonian affairs took place on Wednesday, September 18, inside the Interior Ministry in Tallinn.
The meeting was chaired by The Estonian Minister Riina Solman with the participation of Foreing Minister Urmas Reinsalu and Education Minister, Mailis Reps, along with several senior public servants and the representatives of Estonia’s largest diaspora communities, Canada, Sweden, US and a representative from The Estonian World Council.
In 2017, The Estonian Central Council in Canada adopted and later introduced a resolution, in close cooperation with the Swedish Estonian Association, advocating for the creation of a formal Estonian government committee dedicated to supporting and growing the Estonian identity around the world. The new committee and the Global Estonians NGO are a direct result of those efforts.
“Estonia must be prepared to support and help all Estonians, regardless of where they live”, said Minister Solman.
“We are deeply thankful to Minister Solman for taking leadership of this important new committee that will no doubt help support and develop our global Estonian communities” said Estonian Central Council in Canada and Global Estonian NGO President, Marcus Kolga. “The Estonian Central Council is proud to have led the advocacy campaign for this historical new level of cooperation and the formation of this committee over the past years and looks forward to sharing and engaging in meaningful discussion through this new group.
The Estonian Central Council in Canada supports a recent expression of interest in expanding the government committee to include leaders of the leading two opposition political parties in the spirit of non-partisan cooperation and inclusion.
Canada is home to one of the largest Estonian diaspora communities in the world. The Estonian Central Council in Canada is elected every four years and currently leads the Central and Eastern European Council in Canada, representing the interests of 4.5 million Canadians of Central and Eastern European descent.
