All systems are in full gear for the International Estonian Centre (IEC). Progress in key areas was presented at the March 10th Community Engagement Session held at the Estonian House in Toronto.
Project management, design and the capital campaign have marked major strides forward in recent months and members of the Estonian community came out to hear first-hand about work on all fronts.
Paul Lillakas of Toronto opened the session, and spoke about the impetus behind his family’s donation to the IEC Capital Campaign.
Paul is a third-generation Estonian and represents the Põldma and Lillakas families, who have become Viru Vanemad donors. The family unanimously decided to support the IEC in honour of their parents and grandparents Meinhard and Selma Põldma, who were vibrant and active members of Toronto’s Estonian community.
To our tenants, community, and visitors,
We share your concern about the COVID-19 (“coronavirus”) pandemic and have decided to temporarily close the Toronto Estonian House to public access in line with Ontario public health directives.
The Northern Birch Credit Union and Heinsoo Insurance Brokers will remain in operation as they provide essential services to the community. Please contact the Credit Union or Heinsoo Insurance directly for updates on their status. The businesses can be accessed from Broadview Avenue through the building’s north door leading to the elevator lobby.
For the Põldma and Lillakas families, the decision was unanimous.
“This is a team effort from our family,” said family spokesperson Paul Lillakas of Toronto. “We represent the second and third generation of Estonians and are fully committed to helping our culture thrive. It’s up to us to carry this forward.”
“We are honouring our grandparents, who were such a positive influence on us, and who did so much for the Estonian community.”
The Lillakas and Põldma families – children and grandchildren of Meinhard and Selma Põldma – have pooled personal resources to make a Viru Vanemad family legacy donation to the new International Estonian Centre (IEC).
Möödunud nädal oli International Estonian Centre jaoks põnev: tehnilised joonised on ehitusloa saamiseks esitatud Toronto linnale.
"See on oluline verstapost," ütleb IEC juhtkomitee esimees Ellen Valter. "
This past week was an exciting one for the International Estonian Centre: the technical drawings have now been submitted to the City of Toronto to secure the building permit for the Centre.
"This is a significant milestone," says Ellen Valter, chair of the IEC steering committee, "the project just got that much closer to putting a shovel in the ground! It has, frankly, been a complex process and I'm over the moon that we've crossed that threshold. Thank you not just to David Kalm, Project Manager, and Alar Kongats, Architect, for their perseverance in getting all of the pieces of the puzzle into place, but also to each and every donor to the capital campaign whose contributions energize the project."
