Open letter to the Congregational Council of St. Peter’s Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Toronto

Re: Special assembly Meeting to conduct a vote on the sale of church property to be held on May 31.

Your May 4, 2023 call letter implies a desire to conduct the vote so that it is not challenged on procedural grounds again as has happened in the past. Likewise, our bylaws recognize the significance attached to selling real property by the church.

Our current by-laws state that the sale of the property can only be done by resolution adopted by no less than two-thirds majority vote of the members present and voting at a properly called meeting of the congregation.

A vote was held on March 25, 2023, to approve the sale of the church property. The resolution failed as it did not achieve the required votes cast on the matter. The defeat of the resolution was recorded in the minutes of the meeting. Reconsideration of this matter should be put to the congregation in accordance with the rules set out in the by-laws, including Bourinot’s Rules of Order, which set out procedures for reconsideration of motions (or resolutions) put to the congregation.
